Two of the Southeast’s premier short track events, the World Crown 300 and the Beau Slocumb Memorial Pro Late Model Presented by US Auto Sales event at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Georgia, will have new dates in 2012. The date changes will allow racers and fans to enjoy the events without conflict and to give both races the attention they deserve.
The 29th Annual World Crown 300 event at GMP will be an Independence Day special event. It moves from its normal November weekend to Tuesday and Wednesday, July 3rd and 4th. The Beau Slocumb Memorial, which was held for the first time in 2011 as part of World Crown weekend, will be a 208-lap stand-alone event that kicks off the 2012 season at GMP on Friday and Saturday, April 6th and 7th.
“It has been our intent since we formed Gresham Motorsports Park to make it a special-events facility for our fans and racers,” said Jim Gresham, owner and founder of GMP. “We have always struggled with the November date for World Crown due to weather concerns, approaching holiday seasons, college football and the agenda of other special racing events. With that being said, we have always had the desire to host something extra-special for each of the racing divisions we host at our track.
“With these changes, I feel we go a long way toward accomplishing those goals and will make things better for the fans and the racers. We sincerely appreciate the support shown by everyone in the past and we look forward to making fan and racer experiences even better in the future."
The 29th Annual World Crown 300 on July 4th will fill a void of a large Super Late Model event in the middle of the racing season. The World Crown will feature Super Late Models in a 300-lap battle, with support divisions including the GMP Trucks, Outlaw Late Models and Fireworks on July 4th. The World Crown 300 will again be a three-segment event. The first segment will be 150 green-flag laps and will pay $4,000 to the winner. Segment two will be 100 green-flag laps paying $6,000 to the winner. The third and final segment will be 50 green flag laps with a $10,000 prize on the line for the winner.
Named after fallen young racer and friend to many in the Southeastern racing world, including the Gresham family, the Beau Slocumb Memorial Presented by US Auto Sales will be a stand-alone event on the Saturday before Easter for Pro Late Models. Support divisions for the event will include Outlaw Late Models, Trucks, Sportsmen, Renegade Street Stocks and Mini Stocks. The event was moved away from the World Crown weekend so the Pro Late Models would have a premier race dedicated just to them.
Like the World Crown, the Beau Slocumb Memorial Presented by US Auto Sales will be a three-segment feature in 2012. The race will equal 208 green flag laps, with the “08” matching the car number that the late-Slocumb piloted for many years in the Late Model ranks before passing away in 2011. The first segment will be 100 green-flag laps paying $2,500 to the winner. Segment two will be 75 green-flag laps paying $3,000, while the final segment will be 33 green-flag laps paying $4,500 to the winner. It will feature live pit stops as a 10-tire event and will pay at least $1,000 to start all three segments. The event will be one of the richest Pro Late Model events on the season.
The event dates for these two premier short track events will be in place for years to come at GMP. Track officials have set the Saturday before Easter as the long-term date for the Beau Slocumb Memorial Presented by US Auto Sales, while the World Crown 300 will always be on the Wednesday on or the week of July 4th. GMP officials have already scheduled both events for 2013, with the Slocumb Memorial taking place on the weekend of March 30th and the 2013 World Crown taking place on July 3rd.
“We have watched for years as most everyone has had their big race events geared toward the end of the race season. By adding the Beau Slocumb Memorial for the Pro Late Models as the first of the race season and then moving the World Crown to July with the Super Late Models, it will give fans added excitement,” said Dan Elliott, General Manager of GMP. “It will give competitors an opportunity to race at more of the larger events because the events will be at different times of the year.”
There will be discounts for each race to those who purchase tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased now at www.greshammotorsportspark.com.
